The Tree Lady

March is Women’s History Month and to celebrate we’ll be learning about some very famous and some not so famous but no less important women for this whole month. This week in 3rd grade we’re reading The Tree Lady, written by H. Joseph Hopkins and illustrated by Jill McElmurry. This book tells the story of Kate Session, who loved science, nature, and trees during a time when girls were discouraged to take an interest in science. She overcame many obstacles and in 1881 and became the first woman to graduate from the University of California with a degree in science. You’ll have to read the book to discover the many other amazing things she did and how they still have a lasting impact today!
